Japan, USA in the race for exploitation
Gas hydrate accumulations in continental shelf sediments are considered a promising resource for future gas supply by several non-European countries, such as USA, Japan, China, India, South Korea, and Taiwan. In 2013, the Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources in Japan produced gas during a successful offshore field test.
Recently a European Concerted Research Action (COST) was established designated to marine gas hydrates. Marine gas hydrate -- an indigenous resource of natural gas for Europe (MIGRATE) will examine the potential of gas hydrates as an economically feasible and environmentally sound energy resource.
Stefan Bünz, associate professor at Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, was elected the Vice Chair of the action.
European inventory
MIGRATE aims in perticular to to determine the European potential inventory of exploitable gas hydrates, to assess current technologies for their production, and to evaluate the associated risks.
"With the wide spectrum of gas hydrate research undertaken in CAGE, we will significantly contribute to three of the working groups in MIGRATE: resource assessment; exploration, production and monitoring technologies; and environmental and geohazard challenges. " says Bünz.
CAGE will particularly contribute with a large seismic database from the Norwegian and Arctic margins and development of seismic-based technologies.
The European Concerted Research Action (COST) is networking instrument for cooperation between researchers, engineers and scholars to coordinate nationally funded research activities.

Our long-standing ignorance has its origins in both experimental and theoretical impediments. We take aim only at the latter here, but a few remarks about experiment are requisite. Solution rotations are averages of bisignate tensorial quantities. The average value of a set of positive and negative numbers can be many things. By contrast, average values of chemical shielding tensors are readily interpretable. This is because shielding tensors are monosignate; if one component is large, the average is large.

The optical activity of oriented, achiral, C2v-symmetric conjugated dienes, trienes, tetraenes, and pentaenes can be estimated using nothing more than the characteristics of the HOMO and LUMO derived from simple Hückel theory. In this way, we have subverted for this class of compounds the vexing SOS problem that has plagued the interpretation of longwavelength OR and connected the circular birefringence to the real electronic structure of an important class of organic compounds. This leads to some recommendations for teachers of a first course in organic chemistry. Continue to introduce optical activity as a method for detecting chiral molecules in solution and establishing enantiopurity, but return to the subject when discussing the electronic structure of conjugated hydrocarbons to explain how OR works for a real molecule such as cyclopentadiene. All that is necessary is to knowledge the qualitative form of the HOMO and the LUMO. For instance, the overlap density arises from the HOMO and LUMO, the relationship of the moments that are generated, and how the projections of these moments onto a light vector can predict the sense of the rotation of linearly polarized light. (...)
(...) Once we break the infelicitous linkage of chirality and optical activity, we can begin to more fully articulate chiroptical mechanisms. (2015)

"Limiting the availability of CaM shifts CN's spectrum of substrates toward protective pathways. Modulating CN or CN's substrates with highly selective genetic and pharmacological tools (FK506) does the same. FK506 crosses the blood brain barrier, is well tolerated in humans, and is active in neurons and glia. Thus, a tunable response to CN, which has been conserved for a billion years, can be targeted to rebalance the phosphatase's activities from toxic toward beneficial substrates. These findings have immediate therapeutic implications for synucleinopathies."

An estimated seven to 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease".

Radiologic Results for Amyloid Plaque
In patients receiving aducanumab, a dose- and time-dependent reduction of amyloid plaque was observed over 54 weeks of treatment.
PET imaging using the radiotracer florbetapir1, which binds to amyloid plaque, was used to measure plaque levels in the brain. A composite standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) of six regions of the brain –frontal, parietal, lateral temporal, sensorimotor, anterior and posterior cingulate – was calculated at baseline, at 26 weeks and at 54 weeks using whole cerebellum as a reference.
In the placebo arm, the SUVR was virtually unchanged at 26 and 54 weeks. Aducanumab treatment resulted in a statistically significant reduction of amyloid plaque in the 3 mg/kg [average change of -0.087, p<0.01)], 6 mg/kg [-0.143 (p<0.001)] and 10 mg/kg [-0.205 (p<0.001)] dose arms compared to placebo at 26 weeks. Amyloid plaque levels were reduced by -0.030 in the 1 mg/kg arm, which was not significant.
At week 54, a statistically significant reduction of amyloid plaque was observed in the 3 mg/kg [-0.139 (p<0.001)] and 10 mg/kg [-0.266 (p<0.001)] dose arms. The reduction of amyloid plaque in the 1 mg/kg (-0.056) arm was not significant. The 6 mg/kg arm is ongoing and the week 54 data will become available at a later date.

Clinical Results
The effect of aducanumab on AD-related impairment was measured using the MMSE and Clinical Dementia Rating sum of boxes (CDR-SB). The MMSE is used to assess a patient’s cognitive status and the CDR-SB characterizes a patient’s cognitive and functional performance.
On the MMSE, patients in the placebo group worsened by an average of 3.14 at one year, whereas the decline was 2.21 in the 1 mg/kg arm, 0.75 in the 3 mg/kg arm and 0.58 in the 10 mg/kg arm. Relative to placebo, the 3 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg doses demonstrated a statistically significant slowing of cognitive decline on the MMSE, both with p-values <0.05.
On the CDR-SB, patients in the placebo group worsened by an average of 2.04 at one year. In comparison, the worsening was 1.70 in the 1 mg/kg arm, 1.33 in the 3 mg/kg arm and 0.59 in the 10 mg/kg arm. Relative to placebo, the 10 mg/kg showed a statistically significant slowing of clinical decline on the CDR-SB with p-value <0.05.

Pharmacokinetic activity and exposure were linear with dose. Treatment-emergent immunogenicity, which occurred in approximately 3 percent of patients, was transient and without apparent effect on aducanumab PK.

Better graphene

A new technique invented at Caltech to produce graphene at room temperature could help pave the way for commercially feasible graphene-based solar cells and light-emitting diodes, large-panel displays, and flexible electronics.
"With this new technique, we can grow large sheets of electronic-grade graphene in much less time and at much lower temperatures," says Caltech staff scientist David Boyd, who developed the method.
Boyd is the first author of a new study, published in the March 18 issue of the journal Nature Communications ("Single-Step Deposition of High-Mobility Graphene at Reduced Temperatures"), detailing the new manufacturing process and the novel properties of the graphene it produces.
Graphene Early-Stage Growth
These are images of early-stage growth of graphene on copper. The lines of hexagons are graphene nuclei, with increasing magnification from left to right, where the scale bars from left to right correspond to 10 µm, 1 µm, and 200 nm, respectively. The hexagons grow together into a seamless sheet of graphene. (Image: D. Boyd and N. Yeh labs/Caltech)
Graphene could revolutionize a variety of engineering and scientific fields due to its unique properties, which include a tensile strength 200 times stronger than steel and an electrical mobility that is two to three orders of magnitude better than silicon. The electrical mobility of a material is a measure of how easily electrons can travel across its surface.
However, achieving these properties on an industrially relevant scale has proven to be complicated. Existing techniques require temperatures that are much too hot--1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1,000 degrees Celsius--for incorporating graphene fabrication with current electronic manufacturing. Additionally, high-temperature growth of graphene tends to induce large, uncontrollably distributed strain--deformation--in the material, which severely compromises its intrinsic properties.

During one of his attempts to reproduce the experiment, the phone rang. While Boyd took the call, he unintentionally let a copper foil heat for longer than usual before exposing it to methane vapor, which provides the carbon atoms needed for graphene growth.
When later Boyd examined the copper plate using Raman spectroscopy, a technique used for detecting and identifying graphene, he saw evidence that a graphene layer had indeed formed. "It was an 'A-ha!' moment," Boyd says. "I realized then that the trick to growth is to have a very clean surface, one without the copper oxide".
The solution Boyd hit upon was to use a system first developed in the 1960s to generate a hydrogen plasma--that is, hydrogen gas that has been electrified to separate the electrons from the protons--to remove the copper oxide at much lower temperatures. His initial experiments revealed not only that the technique worked to remove the copper oxide, but that it simultaneously produced graphene as well.
At first, Boyd could not figure out why the technique was so successful. He later discovered that two leaky valves were letting in trace amounts of methane into the experiment chamber. "The valves were letting in just the right amount of methane for graphene to grow," he says.
The ability to produce graphene without the need for active heating not only reduces manufacturing costs, but also results in a better product because fewer defects--introduced as a result of thermal expansion and contraction processes--are generated. This in turn eliminates the need for multiple postproduction steps. "Typically, it takes about ten hours and nine to ten different steps to make a batch of high-mobility graphene using high-temperature growth methods," Yeh says. "Our process involves one step, and it takes five minutes."
Work by Yeh's group and international collaborators later revealed that graphene made using the new technique is of higher quality than graphene made using conventional methods: It is stronger because it contains fewer defects that could weaken its mechanical strength, and it has the highest electrical mobility yet measured for synthetic graphene.
The team thinks one reason their technique is so efficient is that a chemical reaction between the hydrogen plasma and air molecules in the chamber's atmosphere generates cyano radicals--carbon-nitrogen molecules that have been stripped of their electrons. Like tiny superscrubbers, these charged molecules effectively scour the copper of surface imperfections providing a pristine surface on which to grow graphene.
The scientists also discovered that their graphene grows in a special way. Graphene produced using conventional thermal processes grows from a random patchwork of depositions. But graphene growth with the plasma technique is more orderly. The graphene deposits form lines that then grow into a seamless sheet, which contributes to its mechanical and electrical integrity.
A scaled-up version of their plasma technique could open the door for new kinds of electronics manufacturing, Yeh says. For example, graphene sheets with low concentrations of defects could be used to protect materials against degradation from exposure to the environment. Another possibility would be to grow large sheets of graphene that can be used as a transparent conducting electrode for solar cells and display panels. "In the future, you could have graphene-based cell-phone displays that generate their own power," Yeh says.
Another possibility, she says, is to introduce intentionally imperfections into graphene's lattice structure to create specific mechanical and electronic attributes. "If you can strain graphene by design at the nanoscale, you can artificially engineer its properties. But for this to work, you need to start with a perfectly smooth, strain-free sheet of graphene," Yeh says. "You can't do this if you have a sheet of graphene that has uncontrollable defects in different places."

Atomic-Scale Nuclear Spin Imaging Using Quantum-Assisted Sensors in Diamond

Trabajo realizado, por: A. Ajoy, U. Bissbort, M. D. Lukin, R. L. Walsworth, and P. Cappellaro.

NV centers in bulk diamond have mapped the location of single 13C nuclear spins inside the diamond crystal [12–14], while shallow-implanted NVs have recently demonstrated the ability to sense a small number of nuclear spins in various organic materials [15–20], as well as single and small ensembles of electronic spins outside the diamond sensor.

Cito sus conclusiones:
We proposed a practical method for atomic-scale nuclear spin imaging in biomolecules using NV centers in diamond. Recent developments in materials fabrication [24,57], ion implantation [58,59], and coherent control techniques [60,61] have brought diamond magnetometers close to the threshold of single nuclear spin sensitivity. These quantum sensors have the potential to be an important tool in proteomics, as they overcome some of the challenges plaguing other experimental techniques, such as x-ray diffraction and conventional NMR. Most prominently, they would not require crystallization of the sample, a challenge for many classes of biomolecules such as membrane proteins, nor large sample sizes. Our novel strategy combines coherent control of the NV sensor with an intrinsic quantum memory to enhance the sensor spectral resolution. This control strategy not only creates a sharp dynamic filter by alternating periods of a spin-lock Hamiltonian with evolution under a gradient field, but it also provides other advantages. The sequence is compatible with homonuclear decoupling, thus allowing sensing beyond the natural biomolecule NMR linewidth. In addition, our technique allows mapping the couplings among the spins themselves, using them as local probes of their environment. The resulting multidimensional NMR spectra highlight spatial correlations in the sample, lift spectral overlaps due to symmetries, and aid the structure reconstruction algorithms. This would allow us to resolve the contributions in the NV signal arising from different nuclear spins in a dense sample and to use the acquired information to determine the nuclear spin positions. Reconstructing a protein local 3D structure under its natural conditions would allow researchers to work backwards and design compounds that interact with specific sites. By combining the strength of NMR-inspired control techniques with the quantum properties of NV center spins, the proposed strategy for magnetic resonance detection at the nanoscale promises to make diamond-based quantum sensors an invaluable technology for bio-imaging.
